Galerie Molitor opened in September 2022 in a residential development collective designed by June14 off of Berlin's Potsdamer Straße. The gallery aims to create a discursive environment for contemporary art in close collaboration with intergenerational Berlin-based and international artists. The gallery is committed to developing and piloting models for a sustainable and distributive work environment for its artists and employees. Known for her unique vocal style, Lizzi Bougatsos (*1974, Queens, NY) likens her sculptures and installations to performances. Her visual art work comprises an array of personal items, mostly worn and used in her performances such as cymbals, chandeliers and knives that meld and morph into strange and moving assemblage. The chance, risk, and spontaneity of performance charge these objects, which open up a visual universe concerned with wreckage, sensuality, and metamorphosis. Proxies for the body and corporeal traces are omnipresent throughout Bougatsos’s work, as she both removes herself and seems to animate the sculptures she’s left behind. Bougatsos is widely known for her legendary band Gang Gang Dance, which was active for over two decades, and I.U.D., her duo punk noise outfit with Sadie Laska. Recent solo exhibitions include Stage Exit, Galerie Molitor (2024); Never the Same Song, with Lonnie Holley, Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida (2024) and An Ode to Performance, Tramps, New York (2023).
